For so many years I wondered why cows are sacred in so many religions. Did you know that in India they often have more rights than Humans?

This could be because there are so many health benefits in Colostrum ‘the necessity of life’. Colostrum is the ‘first milk’ that is produced in the first 72 hours of all nursing mammals.

It has been used in ancient times by many different cultures for both nourishment and remedial purposes.

  • The Scandinavians and northern Europeans eat colostrum and honey as a dessert to celebrate the birth of a healthy new born calf (as well as contribute to their own health).
  • In the United States and throughout the world, colostrum was used for its antibiotic properties before to the use of sulfa drugs and antibiotics were available.
  • In 1955 doctors prescribed a treatment plan based on colostrum to treat rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Albert Sabin or the ‘father’ of poliomyelitis (also known as polio) discovered that colostrum contained antibodies against polio and in 1962 developed a successful vaccine.
  • Its healing powers were called into play in the mid-1980s when children with rotavirus diarrhoea were treated successfully with bovine colostrum.

Since then there have been thousands of studies of colostrum conducted around the world and research has revealed a wealth of information about the healing potential of colostrum and its components and their ability to fight disease.

A lot of the infectious and degenerative diseases go hand in hand with an impaired immune system. This can often occur years before the actual disease is diagnosed. Studies show that colostrum contains immune factors that work to help restore a properly functioning immune system. In Colostrum, Life’s First Food, Dr. Daniel G. Clark’s basic message, as printed on the back cover of his book, is that bovine colostrum ‘Rebuilds the immune system and accelerates healing of body tissue, helps lose weight, increase bone and lean muscle mass.’ Colostrum has antioxidant properties, is anti-inflammatory and is a source of many vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids which all contribute to a healthy immunity.

Colostrum’s main components contains immune factors which can regulate the immune response, growth factors to help to repair damaged cells and anti-inflammatory factors to reduce inflammation.

Immunoglobulins

Immunoglobulins (IgG), (IgA), (IgE), (IgD), and (IgM) are the most abundant of the immune factors found in colostrum. Immunoglobulins are known to build natural immunity and are essential for building a healthy immune system. They help with prevention and treatment of bacteria, toxins, viruses, and other antigens. The body produces antibodies to fight off these antigens.

Proline-Rich Peptides (PRP)

Proline is a non-essential amino acid, meaning it can be made by the body. Polypeptides are proteins linked together linearly with peptide bonds. The body needs all types of protein to function properly, and the importance of PRP is that they contribute to immune health. They support the regulation of the thymus gland, which is the gland responsible for the normal development of the immune system. They encourage the growth of white blood cells and make the blood vessels in the skin more permeable so the antibodies and white blood cells can respond to the infection. PRP show antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory activity.

Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin is a component found in colostrum and belongs to the transferrin family. It is a protein which is important in the metabolism of iron. Receptors are found all around the body in organs and cells for lactoferrin to bind. It is an antiviral, antibacterial, antiinflammatory protein which stimulates immune and inflammation responses. Lactoferrin is beneficial in maintaining gut permeability and stability. It also exhibits strong antioxidant and detoxification properties which reduce inflammation. As a result of lactoferrin’s ability to reduce inflammation and scavenge free radicals, colostrum containing lactoferrin protects the body from all sorts of invading compounds.

Naturally Occurring Growth Factors

Colostrum naturally contains growth factors which are basically naturally occurring hormones. They help signal growth, repair and regeneration of tissue. Growth factors also stimulate the body to burn fat for fuel instead of the body’s muscle tissue.
